Haifa Al-Jedea: A Saudi Woman Shines in European Diplomacy
Recent decades have witnessed a significant revival of women’s emancipation in Saudi Arabia, with women now playing vital roles in the country’s national progress. They have emerged as pioneers in business, science, culture, and diplomacy, moving beyond their traditional societal and familial roles.
Dr. Haifa Al-Jedea, the Kingdom’s first ambassador to the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Community, is one of these illustrious instances.
On the global scene, she represented Saudi women in a distinguished manner thanks to her proficiency and quality. Moreover, her work represented a turning point in Saudi diplomatic history and demonstrated that women can be powerful speakers and decision-makers in international fora, representing the goals and future vision of the Saudi government.

The Saudi Diplomat’s Academic Career
Although she was born in Riyadh, Haifa bint Abdulrahman Al-Jedea was raised in New York City, where she developed an early understanding of global work and interpersonal relationships. Besides, she studied journalism at Syracuse University before switching to politics and international relations, where she graduated with a master’s degree in the field.
At Columbia University, where she pursued graduate work, she obtained a master’s degree in negotiation and conflict resolution. Additionally, she gained strong cognitive capabilities from this academic diversity that allowed her to confidently and competently enter the field of international work and diplomacy.

Diplomatic Successes & Climate Initiatives
Representing Saudi Arabia in the UN and Security Council, working at the UN Counter-Terrorism Centre, and managing foreign relations at the Ministry of Tourism, Haifa Al-Jedea has held notable positions in politics and international relations. 
In January 2023, she gained the trust of the Saudi leadership when she received an appointment as Ambassador and Head of the Kingdom’s Mission to the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Association. This placed her among the pioneers of Saudi diplomacy.
In addition, she has become a significant voice on climate issues, encouraging long-term planning and investment in renewable energy sources like solar and wind. Also, she writes articles highlighting Saudi Arabia’s and the Middle East’s role in addressing the challenges of climate change. Likewise, she also praises the “Green Middle East” initiative.
With this perspective, she became a model for contemporary diplomacy that connects politics and sustainable development by fusing traditional diplomatic work with leadership on global environmental challenges.

Haifa Al-Jedea’s Life Milestones
Noteworthy is the fact that Haifa is from a diplomatic family. Her father, diplomat Abdulrahman bin Mohammed Al-Jedea, was Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to Norway, Sweden, Iceland, and Morocco. Before quitting her job at the UN to work on Saudi Vision 2030 projects in Riyadh, she was employed at the UN Counter-Terrorism Centre.
She worked as an international relations advisor for the Ministry of Tourism in 2019 and as an advisor to the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2020. She became the Director of Public Diplomacy at the Saudi Embassy in Washington, D.C., that same year. Furthermore, she was a member of the Saudi Research and Media Group’s (SRMG) leadership team before being appointed to this new role. She was also the CEO of SRMG Think.
