The recent “New Saudi Rivers” initiative comprises large desalinated water pumping stations positioned up to 3,000 metres above sea level and functioning at around 90 bar pressures, aimed at supplying the arid interior regions of the Kingdom.
The Kingdom boasts a production capacity of over 11 million m³ per day, with 7.5 million m³ from the Water Authority and 3.6 million m³ from the private sector. Notably, Ras Al-Khair is the largest station globally, producing over one million m³ per day and generating 2400 megawatts of electricity, backed by an investment of approximately 25 billion riyals.
In this regard, Abdullah Al-Abdulkarim, President of the Water Authority, highlights Saudi Arabia’s leadership in operating the world’s largest water transmission systems, contributing to an annual emissions reduction exceeding 37 million metric tonnes through a focus on reverse osmosis and renewable energy.
Accordingly, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia seeks sustainable water security as part of Vision 2030, focusing on water recycling efforts, notably through the “New Saudi Rivers” project and a domestic membrane manufacturing facility set for completion by 2025.
The World Desalination and Water Reuse Conference will take place in 2026, highlighting the significance of the “New Rivers” initiative, which aims to promote water security and economic stability for future generations.

Water Achievements’ Challenges
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has made great strides in the field of water desalination, but it still confronts several obstacles, namely in the areas of operational and engineering capacity and environmental sustainability.
The water project poses difficulties because of its massive energy consumption, which entails raising the water level to about 3,000 metres above sea level and maintaining a pressure of around 90 bar. Furthermore, the Kingdom aims to attain water abundance, expand collaboration with the private sector in innovation and creativity while maintaining ecosystems, and improve the quality and efficiency of the response to growing demand to realise its Vision 2030.
