Seawater Cooling: An Industrial Project Boosting Jazan’s Allure

Jazan City launch the first phase of its seawater cooling project, offering 96,000 m³/hr to boost industrial efficiency.

The Jazan City for Primary and Downstream Industries is about to launch the first phase of its seawater cooling project, with an initial operational capacity of 96,000 cubic meters per hour. The second phase will increase this capacity to approximately 160,000 cubic meters per hour, accommodating existing plants and future industrial demand.

In addition, it enhances industrial land readiness to attract billions of riyals in investments in downstream metals, petrochemicals, and manufacturing sectors, aimed at strengthening the industrial sector’s capabilities and the city’s competitiveness for high-value investments.

The first phase of the project is 98.33% complete, with final testing in progress before entering the operational phase. The project employs a centralised cooling water system for factories, aiming to lower costs and improve operational efficiency while supporting future expansions aligned with the Kingdom’s industrial development goals.

In the context of Jazan City for Primary and Downstream Industries, the team confirms the seawater cooling project as a strategic infrastructure initiative, essential for enabling heavy and strategic industries to operate efficiently and reliably.

An Extended Perspective

Sources indicated that the initial phase of the Jazan seawater cooling project utilises a centralised cooling system, eliminating the need for individual factories to establish their own pumping stations and cooling networks.

Moreover, this approach leads to substantial savings for investors by decreasing construction, operational, and maintenance costs while also minimising energy consumption. It enhances service reliability and operational sustainability, which improve the competitiveness of industrial products.

Investor Cost Savings

In the project’s initial phase, the technical infrastructure comprises four large turbine pumps, with the potential for future expansion, and marine pipelines approximately 3.25 kilometres long. These pipelines feature diameters reaching 3.5 metres, among the largest for industrial cooling projects, and a stage-wise construction of a transmission network spanning approximately 10 kilometres.

From a technical perspective, the project features marine intakes engineered to exacting standards, enabling digital systems to continuously control and monitor the network as it draws and conveys seawater.

Likewise, the infrastructure utilises high-density polyethylene (HDPE) piping, known for its exceptional resistance to corrosion and environmental challenges, and integrates treatment and sterilisation systems to reduce sediment accumulation and marine growth within the system.

Environmental Conservation

Preserving the marine environment is a fundamental aspect of the project, with continuous monitoring of key indicators like seawater quality, discharge temperatures, and intake/discharge rates. According to approved standards, the project’s environmental impact is assessed, aiming to balance industrial development with environmental protection.

The project grants Jazan City a competitive advantage akin to global industrial cities by providing investors with a centralised cooling service. This eliminates the necessity for independent cooling systems, thus decreasing project setup times, lowering capital and operational costs, and accelerating production start-up.

Jazan Project Promotes Industrial Growth & Investment

The project integrates with strategic city assets, including the Special Economic Zone, Jazan Port for Basic and Downstream Industries, utility networks, and the transport and logistics ecosystem, thereby improving the industrial environment and enhancing operational efficiency and return on investment.

The project’s success will be evaluated based on key indicators, including the operation of beneficiary industries, enhancing the investment readiness of industrial land, increasing the number of connected investors and factories, ensuring high service reliability, maintaining environmental standards, and attracting additional high-quality industrial investments to Jazan City.
