In its “Safest Destinations” study, Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection has ranked the safest nations and cities in the world for nine years running.
The Safest Destinations in the context of travel can come in several forms: places free of terrorism, destinations that protect you from extreme weather conditions, countries with a solid infrastructure to help prevent accidents on the road and areas where travellers of colour feel safe and comfortable.
For its list, Berkshire Hathaway surveyed 1,702 travellers who have visited the countries they rated within the past five years.
An important thing to note in this report is that the ratings are “predictive,” meaning they do not consider the possibility of natural disasters. The surveys were conducted in August and September, so for example, Iceland appeared on this year’s list despite thousands of small earthquakes that have rocked the country in recent weeks.
Scandinavia, Northern Europe and destinations such as Australia and New Zealand have traditionally dominated Berkshire Hathaway’s list. Still, this year, Asian and South American countries broke into the top 15, with Japan and Brazil topping the list of safest countries.
